I am a huge fan of ice cream (I mean really, who isn’t?) so when I heard that Portland had an artisan ice cream maker scooping up handmade, small-batch cones with natural, local, sustainable and organic ingredients it was kind of a no-brainer. It was a beautiful summer’s evening so we headed over to Salt & Straw and got in line.
As you might have guessed, this is a popular spot, but it goes quickly and everyone is just so nice that it’s not such a bad thing to have some time to talk to your neighbours. Once inside, you are allowed to sample as many flavours as the people behind you have patience for, so get ready! There is everything from sea salt ice cream with caramel ribbon or honey balsamic strawberry with cracked black pepper. I went wild and got a Thai-inspired special – kaffir lime leaf, lemongrass and a fish sauce caramel ribbon. Matt described it as “alarmingly delicious” but I just thought it was a rad idea executed perfectly.
Salt & Straw is at at NE Alberta Street in Portland, Oregon.
